Andy's KSL-TV #WhatToWatch: Summer movie season kicks off with ‘The Fall Guy’

Andy's KSL-TV #WhatToWatch: Summer movie season kicks off with ‘The Fall Guy’

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of May 3, 2024. It's the (unofficial) start of summer movie season in this week, and we kick it off with Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt in "The Fall Guy." A movie remake of the 1980s TV show about a Hollywood stuntman who uses his movie skills in real life. You can also watch Anne Hathaway's single mom become the object of affection for the lead singer of her teen daughter's former favorite boy band in "The Idea of You." On streaming, check out Jerry Seinfeld and a host of celebrity cameos in a surprisingly funny (fake) history of the invention of Pop Tart with Netflix’s "Unfrosted."

The brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing nerdy with a goal to publish a weekly "What to Watch on the Weekend" minisodes, taken from KSL-TV's Friday segment, and two deep-dives a month on shows, creative works, artists, local events, and other fandom topics.

Andy's KSL-TV #WhatToWatch: Zendaya gets entangled in a tennis-themed love triangle in ‘Challengers’

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of April 26, 2024. In the big movie of the week,  Zendaya gets entangled in a tennis-themed R-rated love triangle in "Challengers." But for people who want a less lewd and more uplifting movie, you should absolutely see "Unsung Hero."  The family drama about a family who moves from Australia to the U.S. in the early 1990s is about faith, hard work, and having to humble themselves and accept help from others. Andy warns, “Take your Hankies!”

Over on streaming, Paramount Plus has a new series for fans of Sonic the Hedgehog in “Knuckles.” And on Netflix, there is a surprisingly entertaining and clever streaming series called "Dead Boy Detectives." The DC Comics show is set in the universe of Neil Gaiman's "Sandman" series and is TV-MA for supernatural horror.

Andy's KSL-TV #WhatToWatch: Director Guy Ritchie comes back to action with ‘The Ministry of Ungentlemenly Warfare’

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of April 19, 2024.  A couple of movies based on real people and real stories, a locally-made comedy, and a return to a Zack Snyder-created sci-fi universe are all available this week. First, director Guy Ritchie comes back to action with "The Ministry of Ungentlemenly Warfare." "Hard Miles," tells the story of a teacher at a boy's correctional school who takes four of them on a 750-mile bike ride from Colorado to the Grand Canyon (Andy’s pick of the week!).  "Villains, Incorporated" is a locally-filmed comedy movie with villain wannabes who have no powers and no money. And streaming on Netflix, we've got "Rebel Moon, Part 2: The Scargiver".  It's the sequel to last year's "Rebel Moon: A Child of Fire" and has the rag-tag group of rebels trying to fend off retaliation from a galactic imperium they hope to bring down.

Andy's KSL-TV #WhatToWatch: ‘Escape From Germany’ tells a miraculous story of LDS missionaries just prior to WWII

Andy's KSL-TV #WhatToWatch: ‘Escape From Germany’ tells a miraculous story of LDS missionaries just prior to WWII

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of April 12, 2024.  It’s a war-heavy week when it comes to entertainment. "Civil War," surprisingly, doesn't lean politically one way or the other, standing as more of a warning than a statement." Escape From Germany," tells the emotional (and miraculous) story of the evacuation from Germany of LDS missionaries just before World War II. Directed by local filmmaker T.C. Christensen, whom Andy even got to sit down with on the latest Movie Show Digital Extra. For post-apocalyptic fodder, "Fallout" is an adaptation of a popular video game now streaming series on Amazon Prime Video. Then over on Hulu, "The Greatest Hits" deals with loss, grief, and moving on through the eyes of a girl transported into the past (literally? Just her imagination?) every time she hears a song she had listened to with her late boyfriend.

Andy's KSL-TV #WhatToWatch: ‘The First Omen’ is a creative balance between scary and gross

Andy's KSL-TV #WhatToWatch: ‘The First Omen’ is a creative balance between scary and gross

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of April 5, 2024. "The First Omen" is the sixth installment of The Omen franchise that puts some effort into balancing scary and gross. Another violent film hitting theaters is “Monkey Man," a vicious and bloody revenge thriller. For more of a love story, "Someone Like You" has some questionable decisions made by its main character but still packs some emotional punch and a good message. And streaming on Amazon Prime Video is "Musica," features Brazilian actors and highlights Brazilian culture, so of course Andy Liked it.

“Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” is seriously cool with the Arrows’ Jon Smith

“Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” is seriously cool with the Arrows’ Jon Smith

Forty years after the original film, the GhostBusters are back and “cooler” than ever. “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” debuted on the big screen to much fanfare and our absolute delight, along with a lot of local Ghostbusters fan groups at the Megaplex Movie theaters. But on our episode of Fan Effect today, we are excited to pull apart this latest edition to the Ghostbusters Corps with Ghostbusters super fan, The Arrows’ Jon Smith. We discuss what makes Ghostbusters a fan-favorite, how ‘Frozen Empire’ compares, and where we would like to see this ghostly universe continue.

Andy's KSL-TV #WhatToWatch: “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” is monstrously big!

Andy's KSL-TV #WhatToWatch: “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” is monstrously big!

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of March 29, 2024. On every KSL Movie Show, we have a segment where we review the ‘Big Movie of the Week,’ and this week’s movie is monstrously big! “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” features the biggest monsters you've ever seen battling for two-plus hours and loudly laying waste to everything around them. If loud smashing and roaring isn't your thing, maybe you'd be interested in "Renegade Nell" on DisneyPlus, ...an old British legend brought to life as a woman named Nell in colonial England is framed for murder and is forced to go on the run. Finally, with the combination of Ramadan/Passover/Easter this week, perhaps you'd be interested in "Testament: The Story of Moses" on Netflix. It's a documentary with feature film-type visuals, interspersed with commentary from scholars of the major Abrahamic religions: Islam, Judaism, and Christianity.

Andy's KSL-TV #WhatToWatch: The Ghostbusters are back in a cool new sequel ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire”

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of March 22, 2024. Forty years after the OG’s (Original Ghostbusters) debut, they are back on the big screen, along with the next generation G’s, in “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.” A new movie called "Uproar"  also hits the big screen, starring Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2) and Minnie Driver, about a kid in New Zealand in the 1980's is really good. And a streaming remake of “Road House” on Amazon Prime is a brawler flick staring Jake Gyllenhall in the role Patrick Swayze originally made famous.

Andy's KSL-TV #WhatToWatch: ‘Arthur The King’ is a true story about an endurance race and a dog

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of March 15, 2024.  This week movies and shows based on true events dominate, starting with a true story about an endurance race and a dog. "Arthur The King" is exactly what the title would imply: a dog following Mark Wahlberg on an adventure race. (What, you were thinking it was about something else?) Also in theaters is "One Life,” starring Anthony Hopkins, about a man from England whose efforts got 700 child refugees out of Czechoslovakia in the lead-up to World War II.

For streaming fodder, there is the story of the hunt for Abraham Lincoln's assassin, John Wilkes Booth, on Amazon Prime Video’s "Manhunt." And then, for a St. Patrick’s Day fix, Lindsay Lohan returns in another romantic comedy in Netflix’s magical and family-friendly "Irish Wish."

Andy's KSL-TV #WhatToWatch: Kids will enjoy ‘Kung Fu Panda 4,’ but will parents?

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of March 8, 2024. Jack Black is back as Po the Dragon Warrior in "Kung Fu Panda 4," a sequel that kids will enjoy and parents might too. Also in theaters this week, a new entry from Angel Studio’s, “Cabrini" is the true story of a fearless nun who brought compassion to immigrants in New York in the late 1880s. And on the scarier side, or should we say semi-scary side, the PG-13 movie called “Imaginary” stars a more-than-it-seems old teddy bear. For streaming (and Millie Bobby Brown) fans, Netflix has the new movie "Damsel," which, of course, has a princess and a dragon.
