Lamar Reviews - "Supergirl" (Airdate 7/2/2026)

 

I walked into this movie with no preconceived opinion. This is a blank canvas James Gunn, do with it what you will. He did not write or direct the movie but as co-CEO of DC Studios he was really involved with the direction.

Milly Alcock plays Kara Zor-El, which we will know as Supergirl. If you are expecting a superhero that is straightlaced like Superman, you will be very surprised. Supergirl is nothing like her cousin Superman, except for the fact that she is good and helps people who need help.

When the movie opens, she is drunk as a skunk, which for a superhuman would be impossible. Supergirl has found a workaround. She gets her powers from the yellow sun, so she travels to planets that have a red sun so she can get as drunk as she wants to be.

Supergirl is doing her best to avoid being Supergirl, but she runs into a young girl, Ruthye, played by Eve Ridley. Her family was murdered by space pirates, and she is determined to avenge their deaths. Supergirl wants nothing to do with the situation until the pirate leader Krem, played by Matthias Schoenaerts, poisons her dog Krypto. Now she has two missions, get the antidote, and keep Ruthye alive.

The movie is 1 hour and 47 minutes, Rasted PG-13 for strong violence, action, language, and smoking.

When you see her back story, you understand that she was raised in different circumstances than Superman. She is less trusting and more skeptical. Alcock is fantastic in the role. The problem is she is way better than the movie.

Jason Momoa plays Lobo, a character that was created in1983. He is an alien bounty hunter who is immortal that roams the galaxy hunting criminals. He has superhuman strength and rides a space motorcycle. He also looks a lot like Aqua Man with Kiss makeup. But try not to let that distract you.

As I said, the Supergirl character is way better than the movie itself. One reason for that is the villain. Krem does not come across as a big time villain, he is more like an executive henchman who wants to be the big time villain, but he just doesn’t have the juice. We say this all the time, a hero movie is only as good as the villain that is in it.

They are some cameos from David Corneswet as Superman, but they have no real meaning. It is like facetime calls saying “What’s up Cousin? Why are you not answering my calls? Call me back.”

I got sort of freaked out when I’m seeing dead parents and a dog that is possibly going to die. I thought for minute has Disney bought DC comics and getting ready to kill another dog? But that was not the case, thankfully. The constant CGI laden battle scenes got old after a while.

I do believe the Supergirl character is here to stay, at least for one more movie, hopefully one as good as the Supergirl character that Milly Alcock played.
